Texas Stoneware / Pottery

Benjamin Franklin Kirkland was a member of a pottery-making family who married a daughter of potter John Leopard. Kirkland worked for Leopard in Rusk County, Texas, about 1880 and later probably worked at the Carmichael pottery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

The handles on this churn feature prominent impressions at each end, suggesting the impression of the potter’s fingers.

I am sure there are more out there, but I only know about three. One is unsigned and in the Bayou Bend Museum. One is in a personal collection and signed but you cannot make out the mark.

This one is signed three times with a stamp. One is very illegible, one you can make out the Texas Star, and one is pretty clear which I have pictured here. If you have one or have more information on any let me know.
