Dunkin Pottery
On December 9, 1854, the “DUNKIN-CHANDLER AND COMPANY” petitioned the Corporation of Bastrop for land to set up a new pottery business, owners were Matthew Dunkin, George Dunkin & John W. Chandler --Minute Records from Ba strop Council Meeting. On December 9, 1854, J.C. Cunningham, Mayor of Bastrop, sold to DUNCAN CHANDLER & COMPANY 10 acres in the Bastrop town tract to open and work all clay mines veins that they may discover on said land for the term of five years from the time when they shall start and put into operation their pottery. --Vol. J. pg. 489 -Bastrop County Deed Records. On September 8, 1855, Bastrop County, Texas, an article of agreement was reached between John W. Chandler, George W. Duncan, & Matthew Duncan to be co-partners in manufacture of stone ware, under the name “RANDOLPH MANUFACTURING COMPANY”, profits to be equally divided between John W. Chandler (son-in-law of Matthew), Matthew Duncan (father) and George W. Duncan (son).--Vol. K. pg. 158 -Deed On August 1, 1856, Fayette County, Texas, John W. Chandler sells to Matthew Dunkin his interest in RANDOLPH FACTORY and land located in Bastrop County, about 5 miles east from the town of Bastrop, land being the 10 acres plus claims for clay or lands purchased for the purposes of procuring clay or erecting other manufacturing of stone ware or potteries.--Vol. K. pg. 484 Bastrop County Deed Records.On April 4, 1857, Bastrop County, Texas, We, James Davis and wife Mary Davis sold to Matthew Duncan and George W. Duncan full permission and liberty to enter on and take possession of all the clay earth for the purpose of manufacturing clay ware on a tract of land granted to James Davis assignee of John L. Smith as a preemption as will more fully appear by reference to said patent dated November 1, 1856. --Vol. K. pg. 608-609 Bastrop County Deed Records.
On April 11, 1859, Bastrop County, Texas, Matthew Dunkin and George W. Dunkin, of Bastrop County sold to Elizabeth J. Chandler of Fayette County, Texas, the E. J. Chandler one undivided third part of all the clay either fit for making potters ware on three hundred and twenty acres (land patented to James Davis) assign of John L. Smith unto her the said Elizabeth J. Chandler. --Vol. L. pg. 271 Bastrop County Deed Records. On April 11, 1859, Bastrop County, Texas. Matthew Dunkin of Bastrop County, sell to Elizabeth J. Chandler of Fayette County, Texas, my title and interest to one equal undivided third part of ten acres of land in Bastrop (town tract) including all the buildings, jug Factory , and every other kind of improvements thereon. --Vol. L. pg. 272 Bastrop County Deed Records. On April 11, 1859, Bastrop County, Texas. Elizabeth J. Chandler of Fayette County, Texas, deeds to her child, William W. Chandler and Margaret M. Chandler, one undivided half of all my interest to 10 acres, deeded this day to me by my father, Matthew Dunkin. Together with one half interest in said improvements, one undivided half in clay on the three-hundred-and-twenty-acre tract. --Vol. L. pg. 273 Bastrop County Deed Records. On October 28, 1867, Bastrop County, Texas, Catherine Dunkin, widow of George W. Dunkin, sold her interest to Matthew Dunkin, all my interest in all clay or earth for making pottery ware on three hundred and twenty acres of land, same land granted to James Davis, but assigned to John S. Smith, and all my interest in the stock called “THE DUNKIN JUG FACTORY”. --Vol. N. pg. 545 -Bastrop County Records. On May 20, 1861, Matthew Dunkin of Bastrop County, Texas, sold to Mathew H. Medlin of Burleson County, Texas, his interest in that certain tract of land (10 acres Bastrop Town Tract), and my 1/3 interest to one wagon, 1/3 interest to 5 work steers and all the yokes, chains and etc. belonging to said wagon. --Vol. M. pg. 58,59 Bastrop County Deed Records. State of Texas, County of Bastrop, Know all men by these presents, that where certain taxes are due the Corporation of Bastrop, by certain persons hereafter specified as assessed against each of them for the year 1879. As appears from the tax rolls of said Corporation. Owner: M. Dunkin; Description of property: 10 acres in Bastrop Corporation; Taxes: $1.25; Cost: $2.50; Total cost: $3.75.
