    Jessie Davis (1887-1969)

Jessie Davis was born near Georgetown.  She moved to Dallas where she studied under Frank Reaugh, Frank Klepper, Martha Simkins and John Francis Knott. She was Frank Reaugh's assistant in his classes for many years and participated in his summer sketching caravans to West Texas and Colorado during 1923 and 1924.  Davis moved to New York and studied at the Art Students League under George Brandt Bridgman and Dimitri Romanowsky.  She returned to Dallas and took a position teaching evening classes in the Dallas Public Schools.  One Dallas critic described her style as characterized by "a feeling of primitive simplicity, joy, and frankness."  Jessie Davis died in Dallas and was buried in San Angelo
